Zhang Huan

Zhang Huan, famous for his performance art, has taken his hiatus from performance art.  However, since 2005 he has made 6-8 different series of works simultaneously. The Wood Cut series consists of rub paintings which are based on traditional printing techniques, and The Ash Series (sculptures and paintings). This is my personal favorite phase of his. He collects the ashes from monestaries and creates this beautiful paintings with these ashes – the result is incredible. In Zhang Huan’s eyes using ash resembles collections of memories, thoughts and blessings – from ancient times to now. As he says “It was the best feeling in existence to return to the creative setting which is spoken by my mother tongue.” ”Upon returning to China, I had a greater appreciation for traditions and religion”, this appreciation came from everyday life experiences.
