Last week, East of Mayfair celebrated the launch of its online art salon with a very special exhibition of works by French illustrator Pierre Le-Tan at the incredible Dennis Severs’ House in Spitalfields. The house is a listed Georgian home that was inhabited by the late Dennis Severs from 1979 to 1999. During this time, he refurbished each of the ten rooms, turning the house into a time capsule of 18th and 19th century London life.
The drawings were delicately immersed in the elaborate living artwork of the house and the two complemented each other both stylistically and thematically; a woman’s neckline with a pearl necklace perched on top of an antique silk dress, a drawing of a dressing table balanced on the actual dressing table belonging to the lady of the house, complete with make up and jewellery, or a scene of a cocktail party resting against the window of the dining room.
Pierre Le-Tan created the signature townhouse of the East of Mayfair website and has been working as an illustrator since he published his first cover for the New Yorker at the age of 18. Since then he has worked for every major magazine and luxury brand and illustrated multiple books for both children and adults. This is his first exhibition in the UK and the first ever exhibition to be held at the Dennis Severs House.
For further information on East of Mayfair and their beautiful on-line curation and future exhibitions sign up to their mailing list here! Their website is a piece of art in its on right with illustrations from Pierre Le-Tan, Thibaud Herem and Farrow & Ball. I love what these guys are doing in addition to selling on-line works from both established and emerging artists, the gallery will be hosting special events and exhibitions in the Shoreditch area in London.
