TAGGED AS Artist, Cai Guoqiang, China, Chinese Artist, Explosives, Gunpowder
Cai’s work is scholarly and politically charged. Well known for using gunpowder in his work – it was used to foster sponaneity and confront surprise, in contrast with artistic tradition and the social climate in China. This enquiry eventually led to his experimentations with explosives on a massive scale and to the development of his signature explosive events. His large scales installations draw upon Eastern philosophy and contemporary social issues. Wildly poetic and ambitious at the core, these events aim to establish an exchange between viewers and the larger universe around them.
